MA Culture and Education

The Culture and Education (MA)

The Culture and Education program is designed for students interested in exploring cultural aspects of educational and learning processes and their functioning in social, institutional and organizational contexts.  The interdisciplinary program draws on the fields of cultural anthropology, education and cultural studies, and helps students learn skills and competencies which help them in the completion of research assignments and independent cultural and social projects. The knowledge, skills and competencies gained from studying in the program will be valuable to people who work or plan to work in educational, cultural or non-profit institutions and organizations. 

After the completion of the program, the graduate will be proficient in the following areas:

Knowledge:

1) s/he has comprehensive and systematic knowledge of the cultural foundations of educational processes

2) s/he has comprehensive knowledge of the terminology used in the fields of cultural anthropology, cultural studies and education and their usage in the social science and the humanities

3) s/he has systematic and proficient knowledge of the anthropological and educational subfields that focus on the cultural contexts of education, including their terminology, theories and methodologies

4) s/he has proficient knowledge concerning the participants of educational, caring, cultural, therapeutic processes, especially from the perspective of the anthropology of education

5) s/he has extended and systematic knowledge of contemporary directions and historical and cultural foundations of developments in social and cultural anthropology and educational sciences

6) s/he has knowledge of the mutual relations between culture and education (in their global and local dimensions)

 

Skills:

1) s/he has comprehensive skills of observing, researching and processing of information concerning cultural and social phenomena using various sources (including ethnographic data) and their interpretation in the context of educational problems

2) s/he has comprehensive skills of observing, diagnosing and making rational assessment of complex educational, social and cultural situations, with special focus on their intercultural contexts

3) s/he has well-developed research skills and will be able to: differentiate different methodological schools of pedagogical and ethnographic research; formulate research problems in the areas of culture and education; select adequate research methods, techniques and tools; process, present and interpret research results with the consideration of their cultural contexts

4) s/he is able to efficiently use selected theoretical concepts to analyze observed social and educational situations and to undertake practical actions

5) s/he is able to make decisions that require the considerations of cultural contexts

6) s/he is able to use cultural and educational knowledge in practical social contexts, exhibiting sensitivity to problems emerging from complex cultural backgrounds

7) s/he is able to solve problems emerging from immediate intercultural contexts and situations

8) s/he is able to independently construct, conceptualize and complete projects in cultural and educational areas, including projects that require specialized diagnosis and field research (including action research)

9) s/he has comprehensive skills in presenting and supporting her/his own ideas, reservations and propositions

Social competencies:

1) s/he is convinced of the importance and need to behave professionally and follow the principles of professional ethics; s/he realizes and formulates moral problems and ethical dilemmas connected to her/his own work and those of others; s/he searches for the best solutions and alternatives in those areas

2) s/he realizes the responsibility for protecting the intercultural heritage in its regional, European and global dimensions

3) s/he is sensitive to cultural and educational problems, ready to communicate and cooperate with her/his surroundings, including people who are not specialists in her/his area

4) s/he is ready to actively participate in groups, organizations and institutions involved in educational and cultural work

5) s/he possesses competencies in communicating and undertaking joint action together with people representing cultural and ethnic "otherness"
