On Thursday, July 6, Transregional Center for Democratic Studies and International Institute for the Study of Culture and Education will welcome in Wroclaw 26 junior scholars from New School for Social Research and around the world for the 26th Democracy & Diversity Institute.


This year’s program will unfold around the theme Democracy Under Siege – an Effort in Understanding, and offers following courses:

What is an Event?, prof. Robin Wagner-Pacifici, University in Exile Professor of Sociology, The New School for Social Research

Anti-, Post- and De-colonial: Re-thinking Democracy’s Predicaments from the Global South, prof. Shireen Hassim, WiSER/Political Studies, University of the Witwatersrand

Media, the New Authoritarianism, and Its Opposition, prof. Jeffery Goldfarb, Michael E. Gellert Professor of Sociology, The New School for Social Research

We the People: Nationalism, Populism, and the Precariousness of the Democratic Project, prof. Elzbieta Matynia, Professor of Sociology and Liberal Studies, The New School for Social Research

This program will be complimented by several study tours of Wrocław’s cultural and historical landmarks as well as several evening events featuring artists and intellectuals from the region
